Environmental Identity
The research work of the EducaEditores Foundation found that one of the most possible ways to achieve the conservation of renewable natural resources is the re-creation of the environmental identity in the community, mainly in girls, boys and adolescents. By identifying as biodiverse, it is possible to generate attitudes of protection and conservation of natural resources as the foundation of an active and purposeful environmental citizenship.
Visit to the Enchanted Forest "Yasuní"
This is an activity proposed by the EducaEditores Foundation, to take those who are interested in knowing the flora, fauna and the Waoranie communities that inhabit the Yasuní National Park.
To get to this Biosphere Reserve, you leave from the city of Quito, pass through the city of Lago Agrio and arrive at North Pompeya, cross the Napo River by canoe and, from the other shore, continue the trip to the Station. Yasuní-PUCE scientist, located in the interior of this Protected Area classified as the most biodiverse Area in the world, in which two human groups in voluntary isolation called Tagaeri and Taromenane also live.
The inventory of the Yasuní National Park tells us that: it has 2 000 species of trees and shrubs, 204 species of mammals, 610 of birds, 121 of reptiles, 150 of amphibians and more than 250 species of freshwater fish (Ministry of the Environment , 2021). The number of invertebrates is unquantifiable, however, approximately 100 can be found in a tree 000 species of insects.
During the visit to the Yasuní you can see a large part of this biodiversity in the day and night tours in the forest, accompanied by specialist biologists and Wao guides. During the navigation in the Tiputini river you can see: pink dolphins, monkeys, charapas, herons, parrots, mainly hoatzines; visit the saladeros to look at peccaries, and various species of parrots consuming mineral salts and playing with each other. Likewise, it is possible to visit a Wao community to learn about a part of their culture and exchange knowledge.
It is important to mention that the objective of this initiative is to get to know this Mega-diverse Natural Area, through a process of educational visits, which will serve as the foundation to re-create an environmental identity that seeks to conserve this Protected Area.
Visit to the house of the Giant Tortoises "Galapagos"
This is an activity proposed by the EducaEditores Foundation, to take those who are interested in knowing the Galapagos Islands, their biodiversity and their scientific importance in the origin and evolution of species (Charles Darwin Theory).
These Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean at a distance of 1 423 km from continental Ecuador, reached by plane in an estimated flight time of approximately 3:30 hours. In Galapagos the airport is located on Baltra Island and you can leave from the airports of Quito or Guayaquil.
The most representative species of the Galapagos Islands are the Giant Terrestrial Tortoises, classified in 11 species plus 1 of recent extinction called the Solitary Jorge; all these turtles are categorized as endangered (IUCN) and all are endemic to the Islands.
In this Protected Area you can see penguins, flamingos, albatrosses, blue-footed and red-footed boobies, frigates, seagulls, black-necked stills among other birds, sea lions, iguanas and a huge variety of species in the territorial sea of Galapagos. such as: whale shark, more than 6 species of sharks, more than 8 species of whales, several species of dolphins, manta rays, and fish among which we find seahorses.
The activities proposed in this Park are related to the identification of these species on land, diving, snorkeling activities, and sailing in the sea to observe whales in their habitat. There are also educational activities such as visits to museums, cultural and gastronomic tours in the populated centers.
It is important to mention that the objective of this initiative is to get to know this Mega-diverse Natural Area, through a process of educational visits, which will serve as the foundation to re-create an environmental identity that seeks to conserve this Protected Area.
